Prioritise agric to create more jobs, grow economy- NECA boss

Director General of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Segun Oshinowo, at the weekend urged government at all levels to embrace policies that would make agriculture number one priority, especially in the area of employment generation and economic growth.

He stressed that sustained and broad-based growth in Nigeria cannot take place without robust agricultural growth underpinning employment and incomes for the large majority of the population.

Oshinowo made the declaration while interacting with newsmen in Lagos on ways the three tiers of Government in Nigeria, the Federal, State and Local Governments can sustain a broad-based growth in the short run to turn around the economy

He said “Agriculture should be Nigeria leader’s number one priority, especially when it comes to employment generation and economic growth because Sustained and broad-based growth in Nigeria cannot take place without robust agricultural growth underpinning employment and incomes for the large majority of the employed population”.

“As a traditional man, who grew up in the village, I am of the view that with correct and transparent agricultural policies and proper implementation, the shift to a greener economy could produce a double dividend – environmental and social”, he added

“ It has the potential to create a net increase of between 15 million to 60 million additional new jobs over the next two decades in each countries in Africa, compared to what business as usual would give, and it could lift tens of millions of workers out of poverty  as well”, he further  said.
