Awoniyi, Success Lead U-23 Eagles Foreign Pros
Nigeria have named Germany-based striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Isaac Success from La Liga side Granada in the final squad for the 2015 African U23 Nations Cup in Senegal, which will serve as qualifiers for next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Awoniyi is one of several foreign- based professionals picked for the tournament, which kicks off on November 28 in Dakar. The 18-year-old striker is on loan at FSV Frankfurt in the German second division from English Premier League club Liverpool.
Junior Ajayi, who has been flying high at new Tunisian side CS Sfaxien, is the foreignbased player in the squad.. Nigeria begin their campaign on November 29 against Mali in Mbour.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has promised the safe return of the abducted mother of Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, who was on Monday abducted from her house in Odoni village, Saghama in Bayelsa State.
Arase speaking from Ibadan assured that his men would soon rescue the 72-year-old Madam Ogere Siasia as the kidnappers made demand for N150 million as ransom.
“The difficulty we have initially is the terrain in that area. Mostly, the abductors come through the riverine areas but we are working and overcoming that and I can assure you that she will be released very soon,” Arase added.
