Lawmaker Calls For More Investment In Sports

The lawmaker representing Etsako Federal Constituency in the House of representatives, Philip Shaibu has called for more investment in sports by the three tiers of government as it is capable of engaging the youths productively.

The lawmaker made the call on Sunday during the final match of the annual Hon. Philip Shaibu’s Football tournament at the Ikelebe Sport Complex in Auchi.

The lawmaker who has been sponsoring the tournament since 2008, said sports is a tool that can be used to curb youth restiveness in the country.

While noting that government alone cannot provide the needed fund to develop sports, he appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to also contribute their quota towards the development of sports in the country.

Shaibu noted that it was only in a peaceful environment that the country can develop infrastructural and economically.

According to him, “I am doing this not because I have too much money, but for the love of sports and also to bring our youths out of social vices.

“It will also interest you to know that lots of talents have been discovered through this tournament and many more will be discovered that will do this country proud both home and abroad.

“While I appeal to government to invest more on sports, I will also appeal to well meaning Nigerians and corporate organizations to do more in terms of investment in sporting activities.

“This call becomes necessary because, sports remain the surest way of productively engaging the youths and curbing youths restiveness.”

In the final match played, the Ibie United of South Ibie defeated their Stars United of Auchi counterpart by 2-0.

The champion of the tournament went home with a giant trophy and N400,000 cash while the first and second runner up went home with N300, 000 and N250, 000 respectively.
