Tension In Delta Community Over Invasion, Police Impunity

Delta State Police Command was reported to have displayed incompetence and negligence in the state recently when two people were carelessly murdered, several others injured and properties worth millions of naira destroyed in Ibrede community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State

This may not be unconnected with the invasion and forceful occupation of Anor/Odabor land in Ibrede community by strangers and members of Ugbo family of Ibrede community.

The community, claimed it informed the Police authority about the planned invasion but did nothing to nip it in the bud, is also lamenting that the invasion, killing and wounding could have been averted.

The victims were Ometobor Prince, 32, and Julius Onogemuhor, 35, years of age respectively who were

According to them, ”When we had no response from your office over the letter of invasion and occupation of Ibrede community by strangers and Ugbo family members who are armed, we wrote to the State Security Service (SSS) at Asaba of our client’s apprehension” alleging therefore that ”if our clients letter was given the desired attention, the killings and wounding would have been averted”.

Independent source who does not want to be mentioned also said one Shadrack Obaduemu boasted to Kingsley Iliromah, the son of the Odion logbo that they ( Ugbo family) would unleash terror on the President and chairman of Ibrede and the entire community.

Speaking on behalf of the community in a two page petition dated 12th March, 2016, signed by A. Irogbo, Esq of the Irogbo, Irogbo & co. Omuyeh chambers on behalf of Ibrede community, confirmed Obaduemu, armed with ammunitions, boasted to Iliromah, and that the President and chairman of Ibrede community would be killed. ‘’Other vices done to members of Ibrede community as contained in our aforesaid letter were also incidented at Ashaka Police Station”.

The petition read in part: “Our clients had earlier alleged that Ugbo family truly marched their threats with action and laid ambush, firing gun shots at members of Ibrede community who were going to Otue lake for fishing and some others going to Ankra village, a neighboring village and in the process two persons were killed and several others wounded from the gun shots’’

‘’The remains of those who were killed have been deposited in the hospital while those wounded are receiving treatment are in an undisclosed hospital in Delta State.

As part of the petition, he said the police has always informed the general public that all suspicious acts and movement should be reported to their various offices but regrettably that ”in our client’s case, the Ibrede community reported invasion and occupation of their community by armed men to the Ashaka Police Station, Commissioner of Police and the State Security Service, but no proactive action to our client was taken to forestall the terror that has been unleashed on their community”.

The legal practitioner therefore challenged the Commissioner of Police to thoroughly investigate arrest and prosecute the culprits involved in the dastardly acts to prevent another round of crisis in Ibrede community where lives were lost and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in 2014.
