It was a bad weekend for residents and passerby of the ancient city of Idah, headquarters of Idah Local Government Area of Kogi state as no fewer than 20 persons including a pregnant woman were mowed down by the rampaging cultists on a deadly revenge mission over the death of one of their members by a rival cult group.
The recent onslaught against the people of Idah and its environs according to some eye witnesses was allegedly started on Friday night when one Danjuma Amodu also known as (Murphy) was gunned down while relaxing in front of his family home at GRA Idah.
In what seemed like a reprisal, some unidentified gunmen in a volkswagen Gulf cars numbering over a dozen shot sporadically and indiscriminately while driving through major streets of the city as many innocent persons were killed by stray bullets while many others sustained various degrees of injuries.
They added that the gunmen blocked the road between the popular Ibro Junction and Bishop road Junction between the hours of 8am and 10am on saturday from where they proceeded to a drinking joint at Igalaogba in search of their possible targets.
According to them, the owner of the beer parlour one Haruna Achema and his wife were reportedly shot while three customers who came in few minutes before their arrival were shot dead on the spot.
At Idah waterside 12 persons were reportedly killed while stray bullets the source added killed a heavily pregnant woman who was selling fish at the spot.
The unconfirmed sources said before the police and military personnel could be drafted to quell the attack, which lasted for for more than three hours, about 20 persons were allegedly sent to their untimely grave. .
Meanwhile the state Commissioner of police Yakubu Usman confirmed the incident, saying that last Saturday some suspected cult groups shot a 27 year old man at Anyigba- Idah road and while the corpse was being taken to the police station,the gunmen attacked and wounded some of the policemen at the station.
He added that an attempt by the gunmem to escape from the fire power of the police , their vehicles hits five persons who were rushed to hospital, but admitted that no arrest has been made yet.
In a similar development a medical doctor and a consultant with the kogi state University teaching hospital Anyigba Dr. Barnabas I. Segun was kidnapped earlier hours of yesterday from his private hospital at Egume, in Dekina Lokoja LGA of the state.
Segun who hails from Isanlu, the headquarters of Yagba East in the state was said to have been abducted by heavily armed men while attending to some of his patients in the clinic.
According to an eyewitness account, the gunmen who posed as patients called the doctor out and whisked him away shooting sporadically to scare the people.
It would be recalled that last week, three officials of Osun state government who were returning from a meeting in Abuja were kidnapped at Obajana area near lokoja even as five staff of Itakpe iron Ore company were equally abducted.
