Abia Warriors, Crown, Giwa FC, Taraba FC secure Premiership tickets
The Nigeria National League (NNL) 2012/23 season ended at the weekend with four teams securing their tickets to campaign in the more glamorous Nigeria Premier League (NPL) next season.
The four teams are Giwa FC and Taraba United FC in Group A as well as Abia Warriors FC and Crown FC of Ogbomosho in Group B after a fierce fight to end the season on the high by all the teams irrespective of their standing on the log before the final matches.
Abia Warriors walloped visiting Akwa Starlets 4-0 to secure its ticket.
City of David (COD) ensured that they stopped Remo FC from gaining promotion to the premiership. COD hammered Remo 3-1, just as Plateau United killed the joy of supporters of Ranch Bees of Kaduna to see their club return to the top Nigerian league again after being relegated years back. Taraba also spoilt the party of another Kaduna-based DSS with a lone goal victory at home.
It was the weekend almost all the clubs recorded home victories to assuage the yawning of their supporters. Only two draws were witnessed while there were no losses.
Indeed, the final matches witnessed a high drama at every center last Saturday with promotion chasing clubs eager to prove a point while relegation-bound teams struggled hard to escape the drop to the lower division.
Never in the recent time has the participating teams fought till the last match to know if they will pick promotion or demotion tickets to play either in the lucrative Nigeria Premier League or the amateur league next season than it will be witnessed when the NNL last Saturday.
The above scenario made the final matches of the NNL very unpredictable for each club did not know their faith until the end of the game especially the table toppers and back backbenchers alike.
Meanwhile, NNL chairman, High Chief Emeka Inyama has praised all the clubs, players, supports and management even as well as the officiating officials, NNL board, management staff and sporting press for a successful competition.
Said he, ‘’ I must say that l am a fulfilled man in the face of the huge successes we all recorded in our professional league. I have no doubt in my mind that we shall witness a much improved league next season with all the innovation we shall introduce to make the competition stronger and more profitable”.
